I have a horrific toothache. Not feeling much like writing, or doing much of anything except sitting around holding my jaw. I’m booked for a four-canal root canal on the 8th (originally was the 30th – so the 8th is apparently the earliest I can get in).
I’m on my third round of antibiotics trying to kill the infection – no effect so far.
When I begged for something for the pain they gave me… more antibiotics! Fucking dentists. I complained on the phone to the receptionist, who sounded bewildered, “But… you said you wanted something for the discomfort?”. Holy shit woman. I understand the logic that the ‘right’ antibiotics will eliminate the problem but what about UNTIL THEN? Morons.

Instead, I went to my doctor who gave me hydromorphone. With all the warnings that came with it, I was sure it had to work. No such luck. A combo of three medications I have on hand, however, is working just enough for me to have about an hour space out of every 5 where I can eat some food.

I am abnormally resistant to pain medication, general anesthesia, sleeping pills and the like – finding anything that works to relieve pain is an uphill battle.

In the meantime, I’ve been editing from a recent double session and doing card design for other clients.
I had the entire month of December open up until just a few days ago, and now all of a sudden I have people fighting for slots. Christmas makes everyone crazy, and crazy in a “do this right now or you will die” way.

However, this client is not like that and actually rocks my socks. I spent over three hours with her doing a double session (family and maternity. Coming back for baby, too), chatting and catching up. I did their portraits last year when her youngest was only five months old and back then she was my favourite client ever. So, I can safely say that’s still the case.

Maternity – 33 weeks with baby #3 and not a single stretch mark on her. I did, however, remove a large belly tattoo from every photo at her request (really, it’s terrible – and apparently a cover of an even worse one. She plans on getting it lasered at her earliest convenience).

Meta photography: that’s a picture of Katie and husband that I did last year sitting on her dresser.

i hope your tooth is better. i swear, tooth pain is worse than labor pain. i had a root canal done in may, and wow … yeah, it hurt. they weren’t sure they were going to do it because the pain was horrific and the antibiotics didn’t help much at all. i feel you … get better. πŸ™

  • I always see you commenting on her stuff on facebook. She works with a friend of mine (or did she may be a SAHM or on leave or whatever now)
Anyway I think she’s totally cute and her kids are adorable.

It’s always weird and cool when clients add me on Facebook, it’s like the biggest compliment. πŸ˜€
She works at a salon, that’s all I know! She’s also the only hairdresser I’ve ever known that had good looking hair (except Claudia, of course). Every other stylist I’ve ever seen always had fried, ugly hair. Not reassuring.

That’s what WE say in our house! I didn’t know anyone else called them that!

  • sualkin says:

Just had to add, her room is awesome. I LOVE lime green decor with brown furniture.

  • sualkin says:

That little girl is so beautiful. Great photos!

Totally odd question, in photo 11 (40-2, I think), is her pinky really bent like that? It caught my eye and now it won’t stop bugging me. Looks like maybe it was broken and healed incorrectly?

  • _melly says:

I really like that last picture I think that will be a cool one to look back on someday. I was in walmart this morning and I saw a girl who was your twin, she looked just like you I wish I had my camera or a camera phone you would have gasped at the exactness. Hope your tooth feels better I had a canal done and I couldn’t take the pain.

  • mooncrab says:

Aww, I like her face; she’s a cutie!

Sorry to hear your tooth woes are continuing. WTF @ thinking antibiotics are any good as “something for the discomfort.” PFT.

  • I love the one of mama and dad’s torsos. πŸ™‚

I’m so sorry about your tooth ache…I have mega dentist fears as well, it’s awful.

  • twobadmice says:

I love them all but I especially love the one of her little daughter and her grinning at each other & her belly. I also love her bedroom. Looks like a catalog. Dang. I also love her bra and want one like it. Hmm, what else? I know you haven’t friended me back so you don’t really know me, but I’m fond of you & the beautiful photography real life posts you make, and I hope your mouth is healing and not hurting you too much.

    • admin says:

She said she got that bra just for this session, at La Senza, I think. Isn’t her bedroom fantastic? She got those lamps (the square ones) at Ikea and then built her whole bedroom to match, but did it on the cheap at places like Wal*Mart and saved hundreds – but her room looks GREAT.

  • Those are fabulous. What a gorgeous family! I’m still sad that we had to forgo our photo session, but I feel better deciding not to do the rush of Christmas cards before we go to Mexico. I hate getting caught up in that Christmas anxiety rush-rush. So I choose not to. Next year I will plan ahead and book a session with you for October…

Sorry about your pain– how are you still functioning this well???

    • admin says:

I’ve been in chronic pain since I was 14. Pain isn’t new to me. :-/ It doesn’t make it perfect or anything, but I can use a few hours in my days as long as I’m taking enough meds to take the edge off.

  • Those are just stunningly beautiful. What would it take to get you to Iowa (seriously, I have 5 years to save up!)?

    • admin says:

Heh, that would be awesome. And, I don’t know – probably a lot? It probably wouldn’t be worth it for you unless it was a wedding, or you had a bunch of people going in with you. πŸ™‚

      • Well, the occasion would be a 10th anniversary vow renewal (mine) and photos that make me SMILE when I remember the occasion are worth any price. Our wedding pictures are horrible and I cringe every time I look at them. Having photos I could display would mean the world to me. And I’m sure that if family/friends saw your work, they’d want photos done too. They’d be crazy not to! πŸ˜€

        • admin says:

I would totally love to do something like that, and it wouldn’t be the first time journal site photographers were taken to destinations for their pictures. πŸ™‚
If you’re being serious, that’s awesome and count me in!

          • I’m very serious. You’ve never posted a photo I didn’t like, and every time I see shots like this, I get incredibly envious and excited at the same time. It’s hard to describe. It’s like, your favorite band of all time is going on tour after breaking up, and they’re only doing a set number of shows, and you luck out and get front row seats and backstage passes, but your show is the very last one of the tour.

But I figure.. if this is the most important thing to me, I have 5 years to set aside money. Even if it takes every cent I can spare and then some to borrow, it will be worth every penny.

            • admin says:

I am totally and completely flattered. πŸ˜€

              • Well good! You have incredible talent, and I want a piece of it!

                • admin says:

I am so completely flattered (and excited!) by this. πŸ˜€ You have no idea.
There is a photographer on another journaling site I admire who has just started into the destination wedding circuit, where local (and far away) fans of her photography will fly her out for events and weddings. She had a number of people from the site itself hire her this way and fly her out for their weddings, which I thought was so totally awesome. The internet is cool. πŸ˜€

                  • I do cakes, and believe me, when someone finds me online and wants me to do a cake for them, it feels absolutely amazing. πŸ™‚ I mean granted, this is 5 years from now, but I’ve read your journal for a couple years and I’ve seen how your talent has changed. I can’t imagine where you’ll be in 5 years if you’re this good now.

  • lalicopa says:

I’m so dying to see what her belly looks like with the tattoo, I can’t even imagine where it is.

  • the_lissa says:

Your pictures are starting to depress me because I want you to come do my family. πŸ™‚

  • eiretamicha says:

Man, I hope you get some relief from your toothache soon! Ouch!! πŸ™

These photos are gorgeous! And the family is just absolutely beautiful! πŸ™‚

  • j_lew says:

I love the one of her lying down, she looks so relaxed and content, those kids have beautiful eyes!

once again your photography leaves me going *wow* with a hint of total inadequate feeling as my pics never will look like this πŸ˜‰ you have a real knack that cant be taught, you either got it or you dont!

  • the_gersemi says:

I am in awe. Those are brilliant.

  • florassecret says:

this is the woman who spun her oldest child in her arms when you took that amazing photo, with the trees just sightly out of focus. To me that photo is the best of your work. It’s so surreal, it could pass off as a painting. Her transformation from blonde to brunette is wild, I wonder now which one she really is. Hehe! Your editing skills is amazing I cannot see a flaw where the tattoo should have been! Amazing! Heather you are meant to be a professional photographer! Keep up the good work. This session made me very happy!

  • Someday I will find out how you capture eyes the way you do. Somehow you get all the intensity and personality onto that little frame. As always, breathtaking.
